As an informal hedge, as well as a specimen tree, Elaeocarpus reticulatus or 'Blueberry Ash' is making its mark on gardens across Australia.
Popular with landscapers for its hady nature the 'Blueberry Ash' grows well in full sun to part shade and prefers a humus rich well drained soil. The foliage is a good glossy green and pink flowers are an added attraction. Flowers are folowed by blue berries, hence the name.
Reaching to around 8 - 10 m in height although taller in ideal conditions, with a spread of around 4m, Elaeocarpus reticulatus can be pruned to maintain a smaller tree size. Regular pruning from a young age is better than hard pruning.
Young plants will need to be watered through the first 2 -3 summers or extended dry periods. Once established Elaeocarpus reticulatus is reasonably drought tolerant.
As a feture tree in medium to large gardens, or as a screen or hedging plant. Best as an informal hedge, Elaeocarpus reticulatus does respond to pruning, however we think it does not look so good when tightly clipped.
